About Us

The Mellows family is originally from Northern Nevada but has had ties to Cameron, MT for nearly 30 years. With their passion for reclaiming old structures and preserving history, the Star M Barn was born. The Mellows purchased this property in June of 2017, with the hopes of preserving a historic barn to allow guests to have weddings and events here. After all, history should be preserved, appreciated, and enjoyed!

Michael Mellows

Mike was a ski industry pro who took his profession into financial advising nearly 34 years ago. He excelled in this field with his compassion for others and his everlasting optimistic attitude. Mike continues to work as a financial advisor but also has a passion for reclaiming structures. As the father of the family, he is the reason the Mellows family had the opportunity to purchase the Star M Barn. He is a family man who has been married to the love of his life, Lynda, for 37 years and counting. In his free time, you can find him hunting birds with his dog Abbi, fly fishing that secret spot, skiing, or enjoying life outdoors.

Lynda Mellows

Lynda is the matriarch of the family, who has always taken care of the behind-the-scenes. She has worn many hats along the way, from contract work to owning a full-scale coffee shop. Lynda is a chef in the kitchen, has a knack for décor and DIY, and also isn’t afraid to grab a shovel. As the mother of the family, she never shows up without a gift and always lends a helping hand… even when it's time to shovel manure. Her passion for DIY and vision for events has helped shape many events into beautiful works of art, including the wedding of her son Colten and daughter-in-law Jess. In her free time, you can find her mountain biking, hiking with her dog Abbi, creating décor, and enjoying her family. 

Colten Mellows

Colten’s background is construction management and mining engineering; however, he joined his father as a Financial Advisor in January of 2016. Colten’s passion for creativity, ingenuity, as well as his knack for functionality, have been priceless in transforming the property into an events venue. Colten has led (or built himself) the majority of improvements to the property, including all trenching for the property’s underground electricity, project management and build of the barn deck, reclaiming an outbuilding on the property into an office, and framing the garage opening into the east side of the barn. In his free time, you can find him spending time on the river fly fishing, working at the Star M Barn, hunting with his dog Shaniah, or spending time with loved ones.  

Jess Mellows

Jess is our darling of the family, and a new mother as of May 2020. Her love for barns started with her very own barn wedding to her husband Colten in 2015. Jess is the gal who always goes the extra mile and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She has helped complete many projects at the Star M Barn, including pressure washing the barn, reclaiming wood structures, cleaning out calving stalls, and has become an expert on a tractor. In her free time, you can find her working out, hiking, fly fishing, and adventuring with her husband Colten, son Jasper Weston, and dog Shaniah Jolene.
